Hidden Gems:

Owl’s Hole

Craving an adventure beyond the beach on Grand Bahama Island? Look no further than Owl’s Hole! This hidden gem is a naturally formed freshwater cave with a vertical drop of around 25 feet. It’s a popular local swimming spot, offering a refreshing escape and a unique glimpse into the island’s interior.

The adventure starts with the journey! About an hour’s drive inland on the Grand Bahama Highway takes you there. Just before you reach Freetown, keep your eyes peeled for a small sign marking “Owl’s Hole.” Just a heads up, the road gets bumpy, and a 4-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended. But hey, finding this hidden gem is half the fun!

Surrounded by lush Bahamian bush, sunlight streams through the opening above, illuminating the cool, turquoise water within the limestone cave. This secluded spot boasts a vertical drop of around 25 feet, perfect for thrill-seekers who want to take a plunge. If you prefer a more cautious approach, a ladder provides easy access. For snorkelers, the real magic happens underwater. Bring your snorkel gear to experience the full beauty of the cave. Certified cavern divers can even join local scuba diving excursions to explore the deeper depths.

As you descend, keep your eyes peeled! Between April and May, you might spot a nest full of fuzzy owlet chicks nestled under the ledge – the namesake of Owl’s Hole thanks to the barn owls that call this cave system home.

Crabbing Bay Beach & Blue Hole

Nestled near Grand Bahama Island’s eastern tip at Pelican Point, Crabbing Bay Beach offers a secluded paradise for snorkelers and beach lovers alike. The beach itself boasts stunning white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, perfect for relaxing under the Bahamian sun.

But the real magic lies just offshore. At low tide, a mesmerizing blue hole filled with vibrant marine life becomes accessible by wading. This natural wonder is a snorkeler’s dream, teeming with colorful fish, coral formations, and other fascinating underwater creatures.

To make the most of your visit, you’ll want to take a cooler with refreshing drinks and snacks. If it’s not too windy, you can dig out a fire pit near the waterline for a unique cookout experience.

Crabbing Bay Beach is an excellent starting point for exploring the East End’s charm. Venture further to discover McCleanstown, the island’s easternmost point. Here, you’ll find a handful of authentic Bahamian restaurants offering a taste of local cuisine and culture.

Tips for a Stellar Snorkeling Experience:

  • Choose the right gear: Ensure you have a properly fitting mask, fins, and a snorkel. Consider renting a wetsuit for added warmth and comfort, especially if snorkeling for extended periods or in cooler waters.
  • Be sun-safe: Apply reef-safe sunscreen and wear a protective rashguard or hat to shield yourself from the sun’s rays. Biodegradable, reef-safe sunscreen is vital to protect the delicate coral reefs and the marine life that call them home.
  • Respect the environment: Avoid touching or disturbing the coral reefs and marine life. Remember, we are guests in their underwater world. Observe and admire the beauty around you, but leave no trace and practice responsible tourism.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your snorkel adventure to stay hydrated and avoid dehydration, especially under the hot Bahamian sun.
