Paradise Cove: Snorkeling Deadman’s Reef on Grand Bahama

At The Bahamas Hideaway, we often get asked: “Where is the one place we absolutely shouldn’t miss?” While our island is full of treasures, there is one spot that consistently wins the hearts of our guests and remains a personal favorite of ours: Paradise Cove.

Located on the southwest side of the island, just a scenic 35-minute drive from The Bahamas Hideaway, Paradise Cove is a family-owned spot that feels easy, welcoming, and refreshingly authentic. The pace is relaxed, the setting is beautiful, and the experience centers around one of Grand Bahama’s most special natural features—Deadman’s Reef.

🪸 Deadman’s Reef

Deadman’s Reef is widely considered the best shore-accessible snorkeling reef on Grand Bahama—and once you’re in the water, it’s easy to see why. The reef begins just a short swim from the beach, making it approachable for beginners while still rewarding for more experienced snorkelers.

The water here is typically calm and clear, often feeling more like a natural swimming pool than open ocean. The reef itself is a combination of natural coral formations and the largest contiguous man-made reef ball system in The Bahamas. Together, they support an impressive variety of marine life.

Snorkelers regularly encounter:

  • Sea turtles, which are frequent and calm visitors
  • Schools of tropical fish, including angelfish, parrotfish, snapper, and damselfish
  • The occasional octopus tucked into coral crevices

Because the reef is shallow and close to shore, you can take your time floating and observing without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Comfortable for First-Timers

One of the reasons we confidently recommend Paradise Cove to guests is how beginner-friendly it is. Snorkel gear is available on site, and the staff takes care to fit equipment properly. There are also guided snorkel tours available. If you prefer to stay above the surface at Paradise Cove, kayaks and paddleboards rentals offer an easy, relaxing way to enjoy the reef without getting (too) wet.

A Full Beach Day, Not Just a Snorkel Stop

Paradise Cove works just as well for relaxing as it does for exploring. Once you’re done in the water, the beach itself invites you to slow down.

The bar and grill serves casual island fare—conch burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers & hamburgers, and other beach-day favorites—along with cold drinks and well-earned post-snorkel cocktails. Lounge chairs, umbrellas, shaded decks, and beach games make it easy to settle in for the afternoon.

The atmosphere is easygoing and uncrowded, making it a great option for couples, families, groups, or solo travelers who want a balanced day of activity and rest.

Planning Your Visit

Paradise Cove is located approximately 24 km (about a 35-minute drive) from The Bahamas Hideaway and is easily reached by rental car or taxi. Paradise Cove can also assist with transportation directly.

There is a small facility access fee (around $7 per person), with food, drinks, and equipment rentals available separately.

Host Tip: We recommend calling ahead the day of your visit to check water conditions and make sure it’s a great snorkeling day. Conditions are usually excellent, but a quick check helps you plan with confidence.

We also have snorkel gear available for guests at The Bahamas Hideaway if you’d prefer to bring gear with you.

Why We Recommend It

Paradise Cove offers something that’s becoming harder to find: an authentic, unhurried island experience. You can spend the morning snorkeling with sea turtles, enjoy a relaxed lunch by the water, and still feel connected to nature rather than crowds. It’s one of those places guests talk about long after their trip ends—and one we’re always happy to recommend.
